Challenges are there in every field. However, it is your determination that takes you through. Today, women are breaking all stereotypes.
The outburst of the novel Coronavirus has been a game-changer for the majority of industries, including the interior design industry. Starting March 2020 onwards, the lockdown has had a telling impact on the market as several projects were put on hold. While it was indeed a challenging time for the industry, the crisis also presented the designers an opportunity to learn and grow. Here, on the occasion of Women’s Day 2021, we talk to Tanuja Rane, Founder, Tanuja and Associates, and an Interior Designer, on various professional and personal topics.
The year gone by has been a challenging year. What strategies did you adopt to tide over the crisis, and how has the year been for your company?
Though the year 2020 was challenging for most of us, we took it as a great business opportunity. As a matter of fact, we received several interior designing orders, primarily for residences. As people realised the significance of a home, they also understood the need for space and renovation. Homes during lockdown not only served as a place to stay but also as a place to work and study. We had a tough yet interesting time taking care of these expectations.
How has been your professional journey so far, and what delights you the most about your career?
It has been a very fruitful and satisfying journey, though I still have a lot to achieve. I had never imagined myself as an Interior Designer. I had studied Physics Honors, but destiny had some other things planned for me. After my marriage, I joined a Diploma course in Interior Designing. Right from the start, I was focused and determined to make a name for myself, and that is what kept me going. I started small, took tiny steps, and learnt from my mistakes. Now, Tanuja and Associates is synonymous with luxury homes, and I feel proud of this achievement.
What do you think is the general perception of women in real estate?
Though real estate has been majorly a male-dominated industry, women are gradually breaking the stereotypes. We can see more and more women entering the field as developers, builders and agents. While there are some negative perceptions, this inclusion has been unanimously accepted and appreciated by all. Women bring a lot of qualities to the table, which will help the industry grow and prosper.
How do you maintain a work-life balance?
Women are great at multitasking. So, maintaining a work-life balance comes naturally to me. I have always kept my family in equal priority with my work.
What are the challenges you have faced as a woman in a male-dominated industry?
At the time I joined the industry in the 1990s, things were not the same as now. There were only a few women in the industry. But, I have been fortunate enough to receive the support of my family and friends. I have had to work with both clients and workers who belonged from different strata of society. Fortunately, I did not face anything disrespectful. What I believe is that people tend to sense your feelings. If you are not confident, they take you lightly, which never happened in my case.
However, maintaining both career and family was tough. I am thankful to my family, who supported me through the turbulent times.
Any tips for women venturing into real estate?
Women have the power to do whatever they want. It all depends on determination, hard work and consistency. You have to keep doing what you love. Challenges will always be there, but your determination will take you through. Real estate is similar to any other field, and women are well- respected and looked up to, provided they are good in whatever they do.
The year 2020 was a year full of lessons and surprises. Now as we look back it’s a year that showed us that no matter what, we will always rise. We will reinvent our ways of life and our style, we will move along, and at some point we will find the lost touch. It has also taught us the importance of our homes. It has made many of us grateful for the additional time we have been able to spend with our families. As the new year approaches, it seems the trend of spending more time is a thing to stay and with people spending more time at home it is inevitable that interior design will be trending as people would want their homes to reflect their personality and character. This year has also taught us the need for flexible, innovative interior design became apparent. After all, most of us now work, exercise, eat and relax within the same four walls every day.
Here are a few design trends that are going to rule 2021:
Work from home:
Now is a wonderful moment to reevaluate the concept of the home office, which has never happened on such a scale until now.
Since we all are familiar with concept of work from home and how it goes, we need to have some improvisation as how to make work from home interesting with the décor in your surroundings. In 2020, people had to learn live together and due to which the concept of open floor plans, where each room seamlessly flow into the next, has greatly diminished. Having a designated space for different activities, allows for more privacy and limits distraction.
Being close to nature:
Staying indoors for longer period of time throughout 2020 left many of us yearning for a deeper connection to the elements of nature. This is the reason that more people started gardening and having indoor plants as a new hobby during pandemic. We can achieve this with small garden in balconies and private terraces and using more organic material in interior design, having all the possible touch of nature around us helps in having better air quality and may even help brighten your mood.
Add some greens by having fresh flowers and plants around on your table; it helps you to connect with nature a little bit, you can pick something that’s easy to maintain like a money plant or a succulent.
If keeping a plant is not something you see yourself doing, try arranging your desk so that it faces your window.
Colour scheme:
2021 will be the year of grey tones. A cool neutral colour scheme connects technology and modernity into elegant spaces. Neutral colours will never go out of style. The most important aspect of this kind of space is to introduce various subtle details that will give a bit more character to an interior. This is ideal for creating more intimate and welcoming environments. A darker blue colour will be the 2021 trend according to the other fellow designers.
Materials and styles:
A trend that become popular in the late 2000s was the Industrial Style with weathered wood, concrete, and metallic lighting fixtures. Light woods which is a Scandinavian inspirations, will be a trend material for interiors. This material will be used not only for flooring but also for covering walls through panels and ceilings; it will prove to be a nature accent with a tactile design trend of 2021. Various design styles of the past including Victorian Era, Art Deco, and grand millennial aesthetics, are making a comeback as people turn to nostalgia for comfort and security.
The year 2021 is going to be a year of trying new ideas as people are going to spend more time at their homes. Investing time and money into selecting the right ideas that compliments one’s home will go a long way in keeping them happy and content.

This is the time of the year when love is just not in the air but all over us. However, this year will be different than usual. All thanks to the pandemic.
COVID has forced all of us to stay at home and isolate ourselves. Though the situation seems to be under control, it is still advisable for all of us to stay at home and be cautious. There is nothing to get disappointed, you can still surprise your beloved. Instead of spending time with your valentine in a beautiful, romantic, expensive place this year, we can spend quality time together at home by giving your home a touch of love.
Tanuja Rane, Interior designer & Founder of Tanuja & Associates has a few décor tips that can really uplift your mood and increase some love quotient in the atmosphere:
1. Playing with colours
We cannot ignore the fact that colours have a big role in impelling your mood and choices. Several brands use colours to influence the minds of consumers in their branding and marketing campaigns. Taking a cue from this, you can add a hint of red and purple to the décor to create the ‘ideal mood’. Red is known to bring out passion, desire and attraction whereas purple helps bring out a sense of calm and loyalty.
2. Use flowers both fresh and artificial to decorate your room
There are two main reasons why you can use artificial flowers to decorate your room. One of the reason is fresh flowers loses its freshness quicker and artificial flowers are easily available and long-lasting. Also, if you decorate your room with artificial flowers on Valentine’s Day, it is a great option for many people, as they are sustainable and especially it is good for those with allergies. So you can use both fresh and artificial flowers to decorate your room.
3. Add automated mood lights to your décor
Lighting plays a very important role in influencing a person’s mood. Dimmed lights are a great way to create a romantic atmosphere in the home. Also one can use app-based lights, which can be easily altered depending on one’s mood through the touch of a button.
4. Fairy lights to uplift the mood
Some trends never go out of fashion and using fairy lights is one of them. Fairy lights add a distinct atmosphere which is neither too subtle nor overboard. Fairy lights are extremely versatile and can be used in a number of places. Battery operated fairy lights can be used in various planters around the home or behind sheer curtains. They can also be created in the form of a heart shape on window glass behind a sheer curtain to add an element of surprise. Additionally, they can also be used in empty glass jars and kept on tables. They will definitely add romance to the entire atmosphere. And the best part is they come in different colours.
5. Decorating the table
A table is an integral part of any Valentine’s Day event. This is where most couples connect because as they say, in India food is the biggest connector. Using table runners, glasswares beautifully decorated on the table is certainly a great way to impress your valentine. Add some chocolates and candies to this, and the table is truly set.
These tips are some of the inexpensive ways we can utilize the wonderful space we have, our home, to connect with one of the most important people in our life and make the best of Valentine’s Day.
